About Geens
Geens are a leading firm of Chartered Accountants & Registered Auditors located
in Stoke-on-Trent, providing a wide range of accountancy services to companies,
sole traders, partnerships and private individuals.
Geens - state of the art accounting for more than 120 years.
Frederick Geen, an early member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in
England & Wales which received its royal charter in 1880, commenced practice as
a Chartered Accountant in Stoke-on-Trent in 1884. Amongst his employees were John Thomas
Sandland who joined the firm in about 1888, and subsequently qualified as an Incorporated
Accountant, and Frederick William Carder who joined the firm in 1907 - after qualifying as a
Chartered Accountant.
Frederick Geen was an active local Councillor and Alderman and served office as
the Major of the recently federated County Borough of Stoke-on-Trent which was
visited by King George V and Queen Mary. In the course of this visit they were
entertained to luncheon by Frederick Geen at his residence 'Cliffeville' which,
some years after his death, became the site of St. Dominic's School, Hartshill. He
died suddenly during a council meeting on 28th January 1915.
F Geen & Co.
Following the death of Frederick Geen the practice was purchased from his
executors on 8th February 1915 by Messrs Carder and Sandland.
The first half the 20th Century saw the growth of F.Geen & Co.'s client
base with many small, privately owned pottery firms, coal mines and related ancillary
business added to the client portfolio.
Post World War II brought nationalization of the independent mines and steel
works and the demise of many small potbanks. The growth of the practice
continued but only by diversifying the client base, computerisation and the
establishment of specialised departments.
In the past 25 years the successive partners and staff have, like the businesses
they serve, adapted with increasing rapidity to an ever more dynamic,
computerised and technological world. By the year 2000 it was also time to
streamline the old name to "Geens".
Recent Times
The present partners, Steve Archer from April 1992, Karen Lowe from April 2003
and Carl France from April 2006, have both wide ranging experience and a unique
combination of technical abilities.
The Geens team is highly qualified and among the current staff are members of
the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, the Chartered
Institute of Certified Accountants and the Institute of Taxation. Over their many
years of serving clients' needs, Geens have consistently recognised the
requirement to adapt and change - always supported by a strong team.
Today, everyone at Geens is looking forward with confidence to generating
continued success for their clients in an increasingly challenging commercial world.
